I'm Apologize Mrs Obama, I did not meant to offend you |
Robert De Niro found himself at the centre of a political whirlwind, at a fundraiser organized by him and his wife at the New York Greenwich Hotel owned by De Niro. He made satire about "a white first lady" - The joke was a careless jest about the current first lady, who was at the political event.
Michelle Obama was in the audience when De Niro joked about the wives of Republican presidential candidates: “Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" Someone in the audience of the swanky event yelled out "No!", in which De Niro replied: "Too soon, right?"
The spokeswoman refereed to the pun as "inappropriate" thereby swiftly distancing the current first lady from the joke. The 'Goodfellas' star quickly released an apology, saying: “My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone - especially the First Lady.”
However Republican presidential candidate Newt Gringrich, whose wife was one of those named by De Niro, is demanding a full apology from the President himself. He said “What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologise for him”
